Programs

Method Dance Society brings contemporary performances, projects, and activities to communities throughout Northern British Columbia. Our mandate includes creating collaborative projects that contribute to increasing the public’s awareness of contemporary art and dance, while serving to promote and preserve artistic excellence in the field of contemporary dance.

mainstage series

Our Fall presentation series provides an opportunity for dance artists in the North to work with external choreographers and dance educators from across Canada and the United States. The program expands artist exposure to diverse perspectives and innovation, skill development, cultural exchange and enrichment, professional growth, enhanced artistic identity, reduced isolation, and an elevation of artistic quality.

Research and Creative Building

We provide space and mentorship opportunities for dance artists and dance educators to develop their practice through research and development. Research space is essential in order for rural and remote artists to enhance their artistic development, cultivate cultural preservation and expression, as well as develop education outreach and initiatives.

Community Moves

Community Moves is an annual festival that provides workshops, engagement activities, and collaborative performances that are based in community engagement and inter-disciplinary perspectives. For the project dance artists partner with community stakeholders and artists to co-create collaborative content that is relevant to their communities. The project provides important cultural connections, skills and knowledge sharing, increased accessibility, community development and sustainable partnerships.

Professional Training

Method Dance Society provides professional training for our company members with an emphasis on skill development, exposure, and collaboration. Faculty includes resident and guest dance artists and educators that have in-depth expertise and experience in contemporary dance on national and international scales. Dancers selected for the company complete an extensive audition process evaluated by a panel of highly-qualified arts practitioners from across disciplines.

Method Dance Society also operates an apprenticeship program that establishes standards of professionalism in contemporary dance.

Community Engagement

Method Dance Society is excited to announce our new Community Outreach Program Network.

With the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Telus Future Friendly Foundation, MDS is the process of creating a Community Outreach Network that will allow us to collaboratively build project with organizations and community partners from throughout the region.

As part of this program we have hired a new Community Outreach Coordinator that will assist us in developing programs and activities that help build capacity for our community!

School District 57+ Outreach Program

MDS’ School District Program provides demonstration and participatory workshops for both elementary and high-school students. The program serves as an introductory workshop into contemporary dance practice for youth in rural and remote communities.

Lhiedli T’enneh Youth in Dance Program

We are in the process of cultivating a dance program for Indigenous Youth in our community. The program is being developed in collaboration with Lheidli T’enneh First Nation in order to best meet the needs of the community.
